Job Description

Position: Seasonal - Dance and Theater Assistant

Pay Rate: $15.75/hour

Application Deadline: 5/22/2024

Under the supervision of the Arts & Events Specialist, this position is responsible for working to support dance and theater instructors/performances. This position must be dependable and enjoy working with children and adults.

 Essential Functions:

  • Responsible for general clean up of studio/work area, organizing classroom and storage spaces; and inventorying supplies.
  • Responsible for instructing and hosting birthday parties as scheduled by the Arts Department. 
  • Ensure that appropriate equipment/supplies are available for classes and events; set up and take down. Completes preventative maintenance by inspecting equipment on a regular basis. (Note: No supplies may be purchased unless directed by the Arts & Events Specialist).
  • Assist with backstage production tasks, such as constructing, painting, moving scenery, operating stage light, and sound equipment. 
  • Assist Instructor with classes by participating/modeling activities for the class. May assist by correcting students and offering suggestions on how to improve their dance techniques or character development
  • Encourage participants to register for next session.
  • Recognize emergency and dangerous situations by reacting quickly and calmly; administer first aid as needed. Completes Accident/Incident report.
  • Respond to public inquiries in a courteous manner; provide information within the area of assignment; resolve complaints in an efficient and timely manner.
  • Correct or inform supervisor of any facility hazards; communicate issues/complaints to supervisor as needed.
  • Attend and participate in staff meetings, trainings, and orientations.
  • Attend work on a regular, reliable and punctual basis; subs for co-workers when available; is responsible for securing substitutes for shifts unable to work.

Experience and Skills

Our ideal candidate will have:

  • Education and/or Experience:

    One (1) year experience in a specialized art form.

    Licenses, Certificates & Other Requirements:

    CPR/AED and First Aid certifications preferred.

    Material and Equipment Used :

    Ability to successfully work with youth and adults.

    Working Environment :

    95% of the work is performed outdoors, working in a park environment with frequent interruptions and distractions. Working outdoors with various temperatures, noisy environment and background noise.

    Physical Requirements :

    Must be able to demonstrate and perform the techniques unique to varying art disciplines. Must be able to push, pull or balance. Upper body strength is a requisite to lift/move a maximum of 25 pounds unassisted, and lift/move a maximum of 50 pounds with assistance. Vision requirements include: near acuity, far acuity, depth perception and color vision. Must be able to frequently sit, stand, walk, climb, bend, kneel, stoop, reach and lift, exhibit manual dexterity and the ability to handle objects. Requires the ability to communicate verbally with both children and adults. The ability to talk and hear via the telephone, e-mail, and through face-to-face communication is needed.
